What Happened on Southbound I-5
All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Taft Highway in Bakersfield were shut down Wednesday morning, September 9, 2026, after a semi-truck caught fire.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fire was first reported at around 10:21 a.m. Flames from the burning truck spread to nearby brush along the interstate, prompting crews to close the roadway completely while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
CHP confirmed the incident was non-injury, meaning no one was hurt as a result of the fire.
Nearly Seven Hours of Delays
The closure caused significant traffic backups for drivers traveling through the area during the middle of the day. Southbound I-5 remained shut down for nearly seven hours before crews cleared the scene and reopened the lanes to traffic.
Motorists in the area were urged to expect major delays and to seek alternate routes while cleanup and fire suppression efforts were underway.
Semi-Truck Fires and Highway Safety
Semi-truck fires on major interstates like I-5 can pose serious risks to everyone on the road, not just the driver of the truck involved. Fires can spread quickly to nearby vegetation, create dangerous smoke conditions, and force sudden lane closures that catch drivers off guard.
While this particular incident did not result in any injuries, highway fires and the resulting traffic disruptions are a reminder of how unpredictable conditions on busy freight corridors like I-5 can be.
