1300+A 20-year-old man died after a violent altercation that began in a parking lot and continued inside a Target store on Ming Avenue in Bakersfield.
The Bakersfield Police Department responded to the store, located at 2901 Ming Avenue, on Friday, September 11, 2026, at approximately 8:20 p.m., following reports of a stabbing.
What Happened During the Altercation at the Bakersfield Target
Officers arrived within three minutes and found a man suffering from severe injuries. First responders provided medical aid until paramedics arrived, and the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Aden Alejandro Aguilar of Bakersfield.
Police say the altercation began in the store’s parking lot and escalated inside Target before Aguilar was fatally injured. Officers detained a suspect at the scene without incident.
Suspect Arrested for Murder
On Saturday, September 12, 2026, homicide detectives arrested 33-year-old Brett Oleary on suspicion of first-degree murder. Investigators recovered a knife near the scene, believed to have been used in the attack.
A GoFundMe campaign set up for Aguilar states that he was killed while trying to stop a fight.
The Bakersfield Police Department publicly thanked Target’s staff and Asset Protection team, along with Valley Plaza Mall security, for their assistance during the investigation.
