1300+Bakersfield police have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the kidnapping and rape of an 11-year-old girl, with investigators crediting Flock Safety camera technology for helping identify the suspect’s vehicle.
Flock Safety Cameras Help Identify Suspect Vehicle in Kern County Case
The Bakersfield Police Department announced that detectives with its Special Victims Unit (SVU) took Antonio Rafael Gomez Martinez into custody on Monday, September 14, 2026.
He faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, rape of a child under 14, and child molestation. Gomez Martinez was booked into the Kern County Jail’s Lerdo Facility on an arrest warrant tied to those charges.
Timeline of the Kidnapping Investigation
According to BPD, Gomez Martinez made contact with the 11-year-old victim near her home on Thursday, September 3. A family member reported her missing after 8 p.m. that night.
The following day, Friday, September 4, the suspect returned the girl to an area near her home at around 12:30 p.m.
Investigators used the victim’s account, a description of the suspect’s vehicle, and details about the drop-off location to guide their search. Flock Safety camera data helped identify the vehicle, ultimately leading detectives to Gomez Martinez. He was taken into custody without incident.
Police Urge Parents to Talk to Kids About Safety
In its release, BPD emphasized that the license plate reading cameras played a key role in the arrest and urged parents to have ongoing conversations with their children about personal safety, including not going anywhere with people they don’t know.
The department also encouraged families to stay informed about the apps and platforms their kids use and to regularly verify who is communicating with them.
