Three people died, and a fourth was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on Taft Highway in Kern County on Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision happened on September 26, 2026, at about 7:41 p.m. Officers responded to the scene west of Harrison Road, in the area north of Taft.
What Happened: CHP’s Preliminary Findings
CHP’s preliminary investigation describes three vehicles traveling on Taft Highway, also known as State Route 119.
The Vehicles Involved
- A Taft man was driving a 2020 Ford Ranger eastbound.
- A Bakersfield man was driving a 2015 Mercedes sedan westbound with a male passenger.
- A Santa Maria woman was driving a 2018 Honda HR-V westbound, directly behind the Mercedes.
How the Crash Unfolded
For reasons still under investigation, the Ford collided head-on with the Mercedes. The Honda then traveled through the crash scene and was struck by debris.
The Ford driver and both Mercedes occupants died. The Honda driver suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Some local reports also say the pickup caught fire after impact and that Highway 119 was closed for several hours between Harrison and Cedar streets.
Victims Identified by the Kern County Coroner
The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified two of the three people killed as 29-year-old Jose Ivan Martinez Birrueta and 26-year-old Nathan Steve Martinez, both of Bakersfield.
The coroner’s listing for the third victim had not been updated with a name or age at the time of the original report.
Cause Still Under Investigation
CHP has not said what caused the Ford to collide with the Mercedes. Investigators are also looking into whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP Buttonwillow Area Public Information Officer.
Why Head-On Collisions Are So Dangerous
Head-on crashes combine the speed of both vehicles at impact. That makes them among the deadliest collisions on the road, especially on two-way rural highways where there is often no median barrier.
Multi-vehicle crashes can also raise complicated questions about fault, insurance coverage, and who is responsible for each person’s losses.
Legal Options for Families After a Fatal Crash
Families who lose a loved one in a collision may have legal options while the investigation continues. Under California law, a wrongful death claim can seek compensation for funeral and burial costs, loss of income and support, and loss of companionship.
Key Timing Considerations
Wrongful death claims in California generally must be filed within two years of the date of death. Evidence, such as vehicle data, scene photos, and witness accounts, is easier to preserve when families act early.
