Bakersfield police are investigating two shootings at the same local television newsroom. No one was hurt, but the shooter has not been found.
Here is what is known so far, and what residents should understand if gun violence ever affects them or someone they love.
What Happened at the KBAK/KBFX Studio
Both incidents took place at the KBAK/KBFX studio along Westwind Drive in Bakersfield. Security cameras captured the first one.
The Friday Night Shooting
On the night of Friday, October 9, 2026, a dark-colored vehicle stopped outside the building. According to reports, the driver sat there for several minutes.
The driver then fired shots into the studio. Investigators say 10 rounds struck the building, entering a conference room and an office.
Security video shows muzzle flashes as the shots were fired.
The Tuesday Morning Shooting
Early on Tuesday, October 13, gunfire hit the newsroom again. Police say additional rounds struck the building.
Once again, no one was injured. Officers have not made an arrest in either incident.
Station Owner Responds
A spokesperson for Sinclair, the station’s parent company, said the company is cooperating fully with the Bakersfield Police Department. She noted that no one was injured.
The company also said employee safety is its top priority. It says it is taking steps to keep the workplace secure.
How You Can Help Police
The Bakersfield Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward. You can call the department at (661) 327-7111.
Residents who live or work near Westwind Drive may have useful details. Doorbell cameras, dash cameras, and business surveillance systems can capture a vehicle or a license plate.
Even small details can help. Share anything you noticed with police rather than assuming someone else already has.
Why Shootings Like This Matter to the Community
Bullets do not stop at a wall. A conference room or an office can be full of people during the workday, and a few seconds can decide whether a shooting becomes a tragedy.
Repeated gunfire at one location also raises a hard question. When the same place is hit twice in a matter of days, people naturally wonder what is being done to protect them.
Those questions matter to employees, neighbors, and anyone who spends time in the area.
Legal Options After a Shooting in California
Thankfully, no one was injured in these incidents. But gun violence can leave victims with serious physical, emotional, and financial harm. California law may offer several paths to recovery.
Personal Injury and Negligent Security Claims
A person hurt in a shooting may be able to pursue compensation from the shooter. In some cases, they may also have a claim against a property owner or business that failed to provide reasonable security. Every case depends on its facts, and a Bakersfield personal injury lawyer can review what happened.
Workplace Shootings and Workers’ Compensation
When someone is hurt while working, the injury may fall under the workers’ compensation system. Benefits can include medical care and a portion of lost wages. Our workers’ compensation page explains how the process works.
Wrongful Death
When a shooting takes a life, surviving family members may have the right to file a claim. A wrongful death attorney can explain who may bring a claim and what damages may be available.
