A swirling cloud of dust and debris was spotted in Victorville on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as an El Niño-fueled storm moved through Southern California. A motorist recorded the whirlwind near US Route 395 and Dos Palmas Road and sent the video to local media.
The sighting happened around 12:30 p.m. No injuries or major damage were reported.
What Is a Gustnado?
A gustnado is a short-lived, ground-based whirlwind. It forms along the leading edge of a thunderstorm’s outflow, known as the gust front.
It can look like a tornado, but it is not one. A tornado connects to rotation in the cloud base. A gustnado does not.
Wind Advisory Remains in Effect
A Wind Advisory was issued for the Victorville area. Much of the High Desert is expected to stay under the advisory through Friday afternoon.
Another round of rain showers, followed by gusty winds, is forecast for Friday. Residents should prepare for changing conditions on the road and at home.
Why Storms Raise the Risk for High Desert Drivers
Victorville sits along major routes like US 395 and Interstate 15, where drivers are exposed to open desert winds. Sudden gusts can push vehicles out of their lanes, especially trucks, vans, and anything towing a trailer.
Blowing dust can also cut visibility in seconds. Wind-tossed debris can land in traffic with no warning.
Rain after a dry stretch adds another hazard. Roads can become slick, and stopping distances grow longer.
Who Is Responsible When Weather Plays a Role in a Crash?
Bad weather does not automatically excuse a driver. California law expects drivers to adjust their speed to current conditions, even if they are under the posted limit. A driver who ignores wind, rain, or low visibility may still be found negligent.
Fault can also be shared. Under California’s comparative negligence rules, a person’s compensation may be reduced by their percentage of fault, but they can still recover damages.
Most California personal injury claims must be filed within two years of the injury. Acting early helps preserve evidence like dashcam footage, weather reports, and witness statements.
