1300+A 5-year-old child suffered major injuries after a truck ran a stop sign and broadsided a family’s vehicle in an east Bakersfield neighborhood on September 24, 2026. Both occupants of the truck fled the scene on foot. Police have since arrested the passenger, but the driver remains at large.
What Happened During the Hit-and-Run Crash
The Bakersfield Police Department responded to a crash report at Tyree Toliver and Wilkins Street around 2 p.m. on September 24.
According to police, a mother and her children were traveling westbound on Wilkins Street, preparing to turn south. The mother’s vehicle did not have a stop sign at the intersection.
A truck traveling southbound ran its stop sign and struck the family’s vehicle broadside, hitting the passenger side.
Suspects Fled the Scene
Police said both people inside the truck ran from the crash site immediately afterward.
Officers later took the passenger into custody. The driver of the truck has not yet been located, and the search remains active.
Child’s Condition
One of the children in the vehicle, a 5-year-old, sustained major injuries in the collision. Bakersfield police described the child’s condition as critical but stable. The child was transported to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera for treatment.
