A driver died Thursday afternoon, October 29, 2026, after his pickup truck slammed into the back of a vehicle that was slowing for a crossing guard and children in northeast Bakersfield. Police say speed and intoxication are believed to be factors.
What Happened on Columbus Street
The Bakersfield Police Department reported the collision happened at about 2:22 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, at Columbus Street and Bucknell Street. Officers found the driver of an older model pickup with major injuries. He was alone in the truck and was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
A preliminary investigation suggests the truck was heading west when it hit the back of another vehicle in the 1100 block of Columbus Street. That vehicle was slowing down for a crossing guard who was escorting children across the road.
No Other Injuries Reported
Police say the driver of the second vehicle was not hurt. The crossing guard and the children were not injured either. The name of the driver who died has not been released.
The investigation is ongoing, and details may change as police learn more.
Why Rear-End Crashes Near Crossings Are So Dangerous
Drivers approaching a crosswalk need to slow down and be ready to stop. California law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, and traffic often brakes suddenly near schools and crossing guards.
A driver who is speeding or impaired has less time to notice a slowing vehicle and react. Even a short delay can turn a routine stop into a serious collision.
Crashes like this one show how quickly a stopped or slowing car can become a hazard for everyone nearby, including people on foot.
