A girl riding an electric scooter died Sunday, October 4, in the afternoon after a car struck her in a marked crosswalk in Oildale, near Bakersfield. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and everyone affected by this loss.

What Happened on Airport Drive

According to the CHP, the crash happened on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at around 4:21 p.m. Officers were called to Airport Drive at El Tejon Avenue for a report of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian on an electric scooter.

Preliminary Findings From CHP

CHP’s preliminary investigation found that a 34-year-old man was driving a 2007 Kia Rio in the number one lane of northbound Airport Drive. He was approaching El Tejon Avenue at an undetermined speed.

The girl entered the roadway on her scooter within a crosswalk. CHP says the crossing is a designated pedestrian crossing with proper signage and warning lights.

The front of the Kia struck her, causing severe injuries. Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced her dead at the scene.

The Driver Stayed at the Scene

CHP reports that the driver stopped and cooperated with investigators. Officials say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation is still open, and details may change as CHP learns more.

How You Can Help the Investigation

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Bakersfield is asking anyone with information about the crash to call (661) 396-6600. Witnesses, nearby residents, and anyone with dashcam or doorbell camera footage from the area may be able to help investigators.

Pedestrian Safety Laws in California

California law gives pedestrians in marked crosswalks the right of way. Under California Vehicle Code Section 21950, drivers must yield to pedestrians crossing the road in a crosswalk and use due care for their safety.

Crosswalk warning lights and signs are meant to give drivers advance notice. Even so, crashes still happen at crossings across Kern County, and children and other vulnerable road users face the greatest risk.

What Families Can Do After a Fatal Pedestrian Crash

When a loved one is killed in a crash, families often face grief and difficult questions at the same time. Understanding your legal options can help protect your family’s future.

How Long You Have to File a Wrongful Death Claim in California

California law allows certain family members, including spouses, children, and in some cases parents, to file a wrongful death claim when a death is caused by another person’s negligence. These claims may seek compensation for funeral and burial costs, loss of financial support, and loss of love, companionship, and guidance.

Deadlines apply. In most cases, California gives families two years from the date of death to file.
