A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle on Brundage Lane in central Bakersfield late Friday night. The driver left the scene, and police made an arrest about 30 minutes later.
What Happened in the Brundage Lane Crash
Bakersfield police responded at about 10:18 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2026, to the 900 block of Brundage Lane. Officers found an adult man down in the roadway with major injuries. The injured party was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
The driver is a 29-year-old who was booked into the Kern County Jail for hit-and-run resulting in death.
What the Preliminary Investigation Found
Police say the pedestrian was crossing in a marked crosswalk at South P Street but against a red light. The driver was traveling westbound on Brundage Lane through a green light. Police said speed and impairment were not factors.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office had not yet released the victim’s name. The investigation is ongoing.
Hit-and-Run Crashes and California Law
California law requires drivers involved in a collision that injures or kills someone to stop and stay at the scene. Leaving can bring serious criminal charges, and a death makes it a felony.
Criminal charges are separate from a civil claim. A family may still pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim, even if the pedestrian was crossing against a signal.
California follows a pure comparative fault rule. A person’s share of fault can reduce a recovery, but it does not automatically bar one. Wrongful death claims in California generally must be filed within two years of the date of death.
