A shelter-in-place order for part of East Bakersfield has been lifted after a hydrochloric acid leak on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) crews responded to the hazardous materials incident on Virginia Avenue. Roads have since reopened.

What Happened in East Bakersfield

KCFD said crews were called to a reported chemical leak at around 6:38 a.m. Engine 41 arrived to find a vapor cloud hanging over Virginia Avenue near a facility with chemical storage tanks.

Firefighters set up a perimeter, and law enforcement closed the roadway while crews assessed the hazard. The KCFD Hazardous Materials Response Team and Kern County Environmental Health also responded.

Facility personnel confirmed the leak came from a hydrochloric acid storage tank. Local reports identified the site as Chemex Chemicals LLC at 1903 Virginia Avenue. A KCFD representative told The Runner the tank held about 6,000 gallons.

Shelter-in-Place Zone and Affected Areas

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office issued the shelter-in-place order as a precaution for zone KRN-421. The zone covers the area from East California Avenue to Highway 58, between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Mount Vernon Avenue.

Residents were told to go indoors, close doors and windows, and avoid using air conditioning units. Mount Vernon Elementary School was also included. The Bakersfield City School District said the shelter-in-place was precautionary and that it kept families informed throughout.

How the Leak Was Stopped

Facility personnel moved material from the tank into separate containers and took steps to neutralize the spill. The HazMat team prepared for a possible rescue and developed a backup plan to stop the leak.

Officials said the leak stopped once the liquid level dropped below the puncture in the tank. The scene was turned over to the facility and Kern County Environmental Health. The shelter-in-place was lifted at around 9:50 a.m., and KCFD reported no further advisories.

Why Hydrochloric Acid Leaks Are Dangerous

Hydrochloric acid gives off hydrogen chloride vapor, which is highly corrosive. Exposure can irritate the lungs and throat, and it can burn the eyes and skin. Severe exposure can lead to serious breathing problems.

The cause of the leak had not been announced at the time of this update. KCFD and Kern County Environmental Health are still involved in the follow-up.

What to Do If You Were Exposed

If you were in the affected area and have symptoms, take these steps:

  • Seek medical care for coughing, trouble breathing, or burning eyes, throat, or skin.
  • Write down where you were, what you noticed, and when symptoms started.
  • Keep records of medical visits, bills, and missed work.
  • Save any alerts, photos, or videos from the incident.

Businesses that store hazardous chemicals must handle them safely. When negligence contributes to a leak of any hazardous material, people who were harmed may have the right to seek compensation for medical costs, lost income, and pain and suffering.

California generally gives injured people two years to file a personal injury claim, so acting early helps protect your rights.
