Small Plane Makes Hard Landing at Porterville Airport, Skids Across Newcomb Street

A small plane made a hard landing at Porterville Municipal Airport on Tuesday, September 1, after its landing gear collapsed, sending the aircraft skidding across a nearby roadway.

What Happened During the Emergency Landing in Tulare County

Tulare County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a Mayday call reporting a plane down around 11:45 a.m. When deputies arrived, they found the aircraft had skidded off the runway and come to rest across the road, with smoke visible coming from the plane.

The aircraft involved was a Cessna 560XL, a twin-engine business jet built in 2002 and registered in Jacksonville, Florida.

Injuries and Passengers

Six people were aboard the aircraft at the time of the incident, including two pilots and four passengers. All four passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution to be checked out.

Road Closures Neighboring Bakersfield

The hard landing forced the closure of Newcomb Street, also known as Road 232, near the airport. Drivers in the Porterville area should expect delays and seek alternate routes until the roadway reopens.

What Comes Next

As of this report, the cause of the landing gear failure has not been released. Incidents like this are typically reviewed by aviation safety investigators to determine what led to the mechanical failure.
