All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Taft Highway in Bakersfield were shut down Wednesday morning, September 9, 2026, after a semi-truck caught fire.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fire was first reported at around 10:21 a.m. Flames from the burning truck spread to nearby brush along the interstate, prompting crews to close the roadway completely while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
CHP confirmed the incident was non-injury, meaning no one was hurt as a result of the fire.
Nearly Seven Hours of Delays
The closure caused significant traffic backups for drivers traveling through the area during the middle of the day. Southbound I-5 remained shut down for nearly seven hours before crews cleared the scene and reopened the lanes to traffic.
Motorists in the area were urged to expect major delays and to seek alternate routes while cleanup and fire suppression efforts were underway.
