1300+VICTORVILLE, CA — Victorville Police Station personnel will visit local bars and restaurants on Friday, Sept. 11, as part of a “Know Your Limit” campaign designed to educate customers about alcohol consumption and the dangers of drinking and driving.

According to a written statement from the Victorville Police Station, the outreach will run from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. at restaurants throughout Victorville.
The “Know Your Limit” program aims to show patrons how much, or how little, alcohol it takes to reach the legal threshold for driving. During the event, officers will ask customers how many drinks they’ve had and whether they believe they can still drive safely.
Volunteers will then have the option to take a breathalyzer test to see how closely their own estimate matches their actual blood alcohol content (BAC).
Understanding California’s BAC Limits
California law makes it illegal for anyone 21 or older to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or higher.
Citing the California Driver Handbook, the department noted that two drinks within an hour could push a woman weighing 120 to 160 pounds over that limit, while three drinks could do the same for a man weighing 180 to 220 pounds.
For these estimates, one standard drink equals 1.5 ounces of 40% liquor, 12 ounces of 4.5% beer, or a 5-ounce glass of 12% wine. BAC decreases at roughly 0.01% for every 40 minutes between drinks.
“The goal is to help people understand the effects of alcohol so they can make smart decisions about how they get home,” said Sergeant J. Snyder. “It only takes a few drinks to impair, and that’s why it is important that people know their limit.”
The Cost of a DUI
Officials pointed out that a first-time DUI conviction costs an estimated $13,500 on average once vehicle impound fees, fines, attorney fees, and increased insurance premiums are factored in. Police are encouraging anyone planning to drink to arrange for a sober ride home rather than risk driving impaired.
The “Know Your Limit” program is funded through a California Office of Traffic Safety grant, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
