A woman was killed, and a young man was wounded in a shooting at a Victorville home on Saturday morning, Oct. 17, 2026. Authorities say the suspect is the woman’s husband.
Our thoughts are with the family and everyone affected by this tragedy.
What Authorities Have Reported About the Fatal Shooting
Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to a home on Hopland Street around 8:15 a.m. The initial call described an “unknown problem.” When deputies arrived, they learned the suspect had allegedly fired a weapon at his wife and her son.
Both victims were taken to a hospital. The woman was pronounced dead there. The second victim had a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Early reports described that victim as a child. The Sheriff’s Department later corrected this. The wounded victim is a 19-year-old man, and the suspect is his stepfather. He was treated for his injury and released.
The husband came out of the home and was detained by deputies without incident. He was later arrested in connection with the woman’s death. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone arrested is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Legal Options for Families After a Fatal Shooting
A criminal case is brought by prosecutors and focuses on punishment. It does not compensate a family for what they have lost. A separate civil claim can address those losses.
Wrongful Death Claims in California
California law allows certain surviving family members to file a wrongful death claim when someone dies because of another person’s wrongful act. Eligible parties can include a spouse, domestic partner, and children. In some cases, financial dependents may also qualify.
Compensation may cover funeral and burial costs, lost financial support, and the loss of love, companionship, and guidance.
Claims for the Surviving Victim
A person wounded in a shooting may be able to seek compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering.
In some shootings, other parties may share responsibility, such as a property owner that failed to provide reasonable security. That depends entirely on the facts. Nothing reported so far suggests it applies here.
Why Deadlines Matter
In California, most wrongful death and personal injury claims must generally be filed within two years. Evidence can be lost quickly, and witnesses’ memories fade. Speaking with an attorney early helps protect your options.
Families may also be able to get help with certain costs, such as funeral expenses and counseling, through the California Victim Compensation Board.
