Driving to Indio for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in April requires strategic planning, as traffic congestion has been known to severely test the patience of locals and festivalgoers alike.

To help navigate Coachella 2026 traffic, we’ve compiled the most up-to-date information on essential timing strategies, alternate routes, and road closures to help get you from Point A to Point B as smoothly and safely as possible.

Festival Weekend Info and Address

When approaching the festival grounds, the most significant traffic jams occur near the festival and on the main routes leading to it from I-10 and Highway 111.

Each festival weekend, the Coachella Valley’s road network faces immense strain, absorbing the traffic of over 100,000 daily attendees, including festivalgoers, campers, staff, and vendors. The worst traffic conditions are typically on:

  • Friday afternoons
  • Saturday late afternoons
  • From Sunday night through Monday morning

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival returns to the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, spanning two back-to-back weekends: April 10–12 and April 17–19, 2026. Stagecoach, the country music festival, follows April 24–26 at the same venue, so the desert region can expect a significant increase in traffic.

Typical Traffic Congestion Spots Throughout Coachella Valley

Congestion is most severe near the festival grounds and along access corridors from I-10 and Highway 111. Vehicles approaching from the north, south, east, and west all converge on the following roads:

Arrival Traffic (Eastbound I-10)

  • Congestion typically begins on Thursday morning as campers arrive.
  • The worst time for eastbound I-10 traffic is generally Friday, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. During this peak time, travel times from the Inland Empire toward the desert may double or even triple.
  • Traffic builds up before the festival gates open, affecting major routes from the Inland Empire and Riverside.

Departure Traffic (Westbound I-10)

  • Traffic on the westbound I-10 is extremely heavy on the Monday after the festival.
  • The high volume of exiting campers causes backups, especially on Monday morning.
  • To avoid the heaviest westbound traffic on Monday, travelers are advised to leave the area either before 8:00 a.m. or wait until after 6:00 p.m.

Expect 30–90 minutes of added travel time during peak windows. Law enforcement actively meters vehicles at key intersections like Monroe Street and Avenue 52, which increases wait times but reduces the risk of car accident injuries

Scheduled Road Closures and Detours Near Festival Grounds

Indio and Riverside County will close roads each festival weekend (Friday morning through early Monday). Additionally, Avenue 50, between Monroe and Madison, will have extended closures from March 23 to May 4, 2026.

Typical Weekend Closures

  • Avenue 50 between Monroe Street and Madison Street
  • Monroe Street from Avenue 49 to Avenue 52
  • Madison Street from Avenue 50 to Avenue 52
  • Hjorth Street between Avenue 49 and 50

Alternate Routes Recommended by City Officials

  • Highway 111
  • Dr. Carreon Boulevard
  • Jackson Street
  • Golf Center Parkway
  • Fred Waring Drive
  • Miles Avenue
  • Avenue 52
  • Avenue 48

With the Stagecoach festival following Coachella, residents should expect weekend traffic disruptions to continue for almost a month, lasting through late April. Highway conditions can always be verified on the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) website.

The Easiest Route: The Best Way to Dodge the Palm Springs Traffic

Timing is crucial. For the best traffic experience, aim to get there either before 11 a.m. on Thursday or after 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening. Absolutely avoid the 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. window on both Friday and Saturday. Other helpful recommendations include:

  • Fill up with gas before reaching the Coachella Valley, as nearby stations have long lines.
  • Download offline maps. Cell data is spotty with 100,000+ phones competing, increasing the chance of taking a wrong turn and getting lost.
  • Official shuttles from Palm Springs and nearby valley hotels use designated routes to bypass traffic, making them a less stressful option–especially when trying to make headliner sets.

Latest Updates and Suggested Routes by Direction

  • From Los Angeles/Orange County: I-10 east to Jefferson Street or Washington Street
  • From San Diego: I-15 to I-215 to I-10
  • From Phoenix: I-10 west – if I-10 is gridlocked, Highway 111 is a good alternate route

Alternatives to Driving to the Empire Polo Club

Day Parking, Carpools, and Shuttles

Driving offers flexibility but risks 1–3 hours of exit delays, and expect 60–120 minutes to reach main roads after the last act.

Carpooling is a practical alternative for campers and eases the stress of traffic and parking by using designated lots, Lots 2A, 4A, and 13A.

Camping LOT 2A will also be the pick-up and drop-off points for friends and family, rideshares, and taxis on Thursday. Signs will be posted directing traffic for the preceding days, but can be verified here.

While designated Coachella shuttles often run during peak hours, they offer convenience with drop-off and pick-up points closer to main entrances.

Uber and Lyft Drop-Offs

Rideshares also offer another means of convenient transportation, but expect surge pricing. Additionally, plan to walk 10–20 minutes from the venue to the rideshare lot.

Drop-offs are at the southwest corner (Avenue 49 and Monroe), and pickups are at the northeast corner (Avenue 52 and Madison), operating from the late morning until several hours after the last show.

Walking and Biking

Many nearby vacation rentals and Airbnbs are walkable, but bicycle and pedestrian access is restricted on Monroe Street (Avenues 49–52) and Madison Street (Avenues 50–52) by fences that direct walkers to official entries, so plan for detours. Additionally, golf carts are banned on high-foot-traffic routes.

Heading Back Home as Seamlessly as Possible

Traffic congestion worsens near the festival grounds and along access routes from I-10 and Highway 111.

Monday morning experiences the worst gridlock as 40,000+ visitors leave the grounds and campsite. To avoid I-10 traffic, leave before 9:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. on Monday, or stay until Tuesday. Always prioritize safety by rotating drivers and plan rest stops for the long night drive back to LA, San Diego, Phoenix, or wherever you call home.
