A woman died Saturday evening after a vehicle struck her on Rosedale Highway in northwest Bakersfield. The California Highway Patrol is investigating.
What Happened on Rosedale Highway
CHP officers responded just before 7 p.m. on Oct. 10, 2026, to a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. The crash occurred near Karla Street, near Verdugo Lane, and CHP closed the westbound lanes during the investigation before they reopened.
What CHP Says About the Collision
CHP reports a 26-year-old man was driving a Toyota Camry westbound on Rosedale Highway. According to the preliminary findings, a woman entered the roadway outside of a crosswalk, directly in the path of the car.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver stayed and cooperated with officers. CHP said it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Pedestrian Crashes Outside a Crosswalk
Early reports do not settle who is legally responsible. In California, pedestrians crossing outside a crosswalk must yield to vehicles. Drivers must still use due care and avoid hitting pedestrians, whether or not they are in a crosswalk.
When determining fault, the lighting, speed, visibility, and what the driver could reasonably have seen are often considered. Because California uses pure comparative fault, a victim’s share of responsibility reduces compensation but does not erase a claim.
