Nine people allegedly connected to the Sinaloa Cartel were arrested on October 16, 2026, in San Bernardino. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrests on October 28.
Investigators with the Rural Crime Task Force, assisted by the Specialized Enforcement Division, served a search warrant at a home in the city. Officials say the case centered on a criminal network that targeted BNSF Railway trains in burglaries over the past 12 months.
What Investigators Say They Found
Deputies reported recovering more than $333,000 in stolen retail merchandise. The items included speakers, computer hardware, name-brand shoes, apparel, and tools.
Authorities also seized four semiautomatic handguns, a surveillance drone, and a large amount of cash. They took tools allegedly used to get into train cargo containers, suspected fentanyl, and four vehicles tied to recent train burglaries.
The nine suspects were booked at the Central Detention Center. Charges include conspiracy, theft of railroad property, and possession of a controlled substance while armed. Deputies say the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.
Why Train Cargo Theft Is a Growing Concern
This case is part of a larger pattern. A BNSF chief special agent has said cargo train thefts rose 40 percent in 2024 compared with 2023.
Reports from other states describe a similar method. Thieves board slow or stopped trains, cut into containers and unload goods. In some cases, they cut air hoses to force a stop. Other members of the group wait nearby in box trucks or trailers to haul the merchandise away.
Investigators say these thefts can involve weapons and organized planning. They are far from minor property crimes.
How Crimes Like This Can Affect Public Safety
Organized theft rings often depend on vehicles moving quickly and quietly through neighborhoods and along rural roads. That can put everyday drivers at risk.
Heavy box trucks, overloaded vehicles, and drivers trying to avoid law enforcement can all contribute to dangerous crashes. A sudden train stop can also create hazards at crossings and nearby roadways.
If you are hurt in a crash and the other driver was connected to criminal activity, you still have rights. A civil injury claim is separate from any criminal case. It focuses on your medical bills, lost income, and other losses.
